Yesterday I had the good fortune to go to an amazing Taiko concert. Taiko is a traditional Japanese drumming art. They play drums ranging in sizes from really small, to maybe 10 feet tall. The show was unbelievably good.

What does this have to do with teaching English to children?

That’s a good question. The performers happened to be… all children! Actually from 7 to 18 years old. I was amazed at the skill, determination, and concentration of these young performers. The show would have been amazing if they were adults. It got me thinking that maybe I need to push my students a bit harder sometimes, I might be amazed at what they can achieve.

Of course there is a fine line between pushing your students too hard, or to the perfect point. I’m still learning on this one. Today though in a class of 4-6 year olds, I challenged them a bit more than usual. Guess what happened? They were great! So be inspired, and don’t be afraid to challenge your young students, they might just amaze you!
